Here is a fun way for the kids to wake up. When the Rocket Alarm Clock sounds a countdown starts and if not switched off in time, the rocket will fire into the air. I guess the goal is to get the kids out of bed to prevent the rocket from launching, but we all know what will really happen. They will wake and watch, but not fall back to sleep… because the only way to turn it off is to retrieve and replace the rocket on its base.

We've been using our toaster oven a lot more since the whole energy crisis has been heating up. We thought this 6-slice toaster oven with convection technology for faster cooking that has 2 rack positions looks like a good oven if you don't have one already. The 150- to 450-degree F thermostat should be able to dial up the correct temperature for whatever you want to cook, and the 60-minute timer with auto shut-off makes it almost like your big oven with a kitchen timer.

We believe we've saved just north of $43 bucks last month by cooking more with smaller appliances, and even if the savings are less - they're still savings.

Geeks like us are always coming up with new ways to keep ourselves away from anywhere else in the house except at the desktop next to our beloved PC. Here we have another, rather extreme example that I wouldn't have done, but someone did decide that they needed to cook while sitting at their PC. Their are also instructions published on how to do it over at Instructables (follow the link at the end of the post if you're interested). The USB frying pan here in the picture, seems to cook rather well in the video, it does appear to take some time to heat up, I would say it looks rather dangerous and probably makes your room and computer all smelly and oily if you decided to fry something up? Might want to consider covering up the keyboard with a keyboard napkin if you want to keep things from getting all greasy!

It's far from the first company to attempt to make a more environmentally-friendly flash drive, but given the near disposable nature of them these days, that's not exactly a bad thing. This latest drive from Hong Kong-based Hoshino also takes a decidedly different approach than other drives that simply keep the hazardous chemicals and whatnot to a minium, with it actually constructed out of polylactide (or PLA) made from corn that is, technically, biodegradable. The downside is that in order for it to be broken down, PLA needs to be blasted with heat for ten days on end at a specialized facility, which isn't exactly the most direct route back into the ground, or an accessible option for everybody at the moment (there's also the small matter of it being based on a food product). The drive also apparently isn't available to the general public just yet, but companies interested in doing business with Hoshino can contact 'em for more details.

[Via Everything USB, background on PLA via Smithsonian Magazine]

Excremental brown is not much in demand as a laptop color, but Asus can't even be bothered to wipe off a new Eee after it spurts a new model out of its netbook production orifice before selling it these days.

Seen here: the Eee S101, which will be Asus' luxury Eee model: less than one inch thick, featuring a 10.2-inch LCD screen, an Atom processor and up to 64GB of SSD. Going price? $899 when it's launched in mid-September.
